Have you had Therapy?

I’m asking you all for your opinions and experience with therapy and weight loss. I cannot stop eating. I need help. I have been to therapy 2x on 2 occasions. I didn’t gain much insight as to why I do these things and MOST importantly, how I can get it in my head to STOP it.

So…

Have you went?

Who did you look for? Credentials? Specializing in?

How long did you go?

Was it worth it?

Any help would be appreciated!

I think you’re really brave for putting this out there, J. I’ve been thinking a lot about this too, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of response you get.

It’s about getting to the root cause, isn’t it? Because I’m sure that you don’t want to be battling this for the rest of your life. We will conquer it once and for all!:-)

    Hi,
I have a therapist and a psychiatrist. The latter is for my meds (prozac) but we talk also. Then I have an acupunturist too! We all try to work as a team to make me happier. I think if I was happy I would lose the weight. I have been at this for over three years…and living in socal its been expensive but I consider myself worth it. If I still lived in Canada I am not sure I would be getting all this help as its not looked upon as acceptable….acceptable but not “as acceptable”. It makes for a busy schedule too – all the time and energy to go to the appointments as I drive into LA (its kind of a small town that I live in and I don’t want people talking about me). I am closest to my therapist – she seems to really get me. Hope this helps? You can ask me questions if you want.

I’ve been to a therapist before for my weight. The counseling is a free service through work, so I didn’t get to do a lot of research into credentials etc. It was all right, but it didn’t help me in the end. I think because I wasn’t truly motivated. I think all of these tools – pills, dieticians, trainers, exercise equipment, diet plans, therapy, etc. – can be helpful, but none of them will do a thing unless you’re motivated, truly motivated to lose weight AND believe you deserve it. Sigh…I wish I could get THAT out of a pill!!

I see a therapist, who is a social worker. She’s amazing, even though she doesn’t have a PHD or anything. I suggest reading “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Dummies” (I know, better than most of the Dummies books), and finding a Cognitive Behavioral therapist. Once you start changing your thinking and behaviors, you will find out what the core issues are, fast.

I know you have what it takes…you just need to build the confidence.
